PhD STUDENT (R1)
IN THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOECONOMY AND SYSTEMS ANALYSIS

Monthly gross salary: €2,000 (decreased by the compulsory social insurance rates applicable in Poland and paid by the Institute as employer – it means approximately average monthly gross salary of €1,700)
Duration of employment:32 months to be extended upon funding possibilities.
The Department of Bioeconomy and Systems Analysis is looking for a PhD student with a background in agricultural economics and/or agricultural sciences. Research will be conducted in the project "Bioecon - New Strategies on Bio-Economy in Poland”. Please find more information on the website www.bioecon.iung.pulawy.pl/en/.
Aims of the project
In the program"BioEcon", research is coordinated to develop, extend and fully unlock the research potential of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation (IUNG) in accordance with the new global strategies trends and changes in national needs through the creation of an excellent international and interdisciplinary department on bio-economy and systems analysis. The objective of the thesis is to build upon conventional simulation and/or optimization models to evaluate both the economic and environmental sustainability of agriculture in Poland. For this purpose, systems, rotations and production techniques that may reconcile environmental security, public acceptance and economic profitability for the actors involved in the production process will be investigated. The candidate will use existing models and will contribute to refine and improve them in order to reflect (a) a solid micro-economic background and sufficient detail of farm management and agronomic conditions, (b) ability to simulate farmers’ decision on innovation adoption, reaction to policy measures, learning and risk behavior, (c) the effect of own experience and observation of surrounding actors’ experiences and also interactions with neighbours in terms of joint use of machinery, (d) spatial interaction regarding site specific factors of production such as land and water, (e) environmental feedbacks, i.e. soil erosion, nitrate leaching, pest and disease diffusion.
The successful candidatewill have a M.Sc. degree in agricultural economics, agricultural sciences or a related discipline as well as strong analytical skills. Very good knowledge of statistics, agricultural system modeling and the agricultural policy as well as the Polish agricultural system are appreciated. Proficient oral and written and English skills are expected.
